CPSC, Target Announce Recall of Jumbo Pencils with Sharpeners

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Jumbo Pencils with Sharpeners

Units: About 176,000

Manufacturer: Target Corp., of Minneapolis, Minn.

Hazard: The sharpener's razor blade is exposed when the cover is removed.
Also, the pencil sharpener hole is large enough to allow a finger to fit inside. This poses a laceration hazard to children and adults.

Incidents/Injuries: Target has received 17 reports involving the pencil sharpeners, including 12 children and adults who received cuts to their fingers from the sharpener's razor blade.

Description: The jumbo pencil has a red eraser on the end and comes with a pencil sharpener. Pencils are either short, 8 ½ inches long and one inch wide, or long, 15 inches long and ½ inch wide. The pencils are blue, red or striped. The sharpeners are pink or blue and come in a clear plastic pouch.
Model number 70505 is printed on the pouch.

Sold at: Target Stores nationwide from July 2005 through August 2005 for about $1.

Remedy: Consumers should take the recalled jumbo pencil with sharpeners away from children immediately and return them to the nearest Target store for a GiftCard of $1 plus applicable state tax.

CPSC, Dorel Juvenile Group USA Announce Recall to Repair Battery-Powered Ride-On Vehicles

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Battery-Powered Ride-On Vehicles

Units: About 141,000

Manufacturer: Dorel Juvenile Group USA, of Columbus, Ind.

Hazard: An electronic malfunction can occur in the ride-on vehicle's circuit board and/or battery connector, resulting in smoking and melting of components. This poses a vehicle fire hazard and a burn hazard to consumers if components are touched while malfunctioning.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 49 reports of overheating or melting components on the ride-on vehicles. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recalled battery-powered ride-on vehicles include the Pink Corvette(r), Torch Red Corvette(r), Yellow Race Car Corvette(r), Red Electroplate Corvette(r), Fire Engine, and Batmobile(r) with the model numbers listed in the chart below. They were sold under the brands Safety 1st and Kid Trax by Safety 1st. The ride-on vehicles were manufactured between January 2004 and August 2005. The manufacture date is located on the underside of the unit and is molded into the plastic body as shown below. The circle on left displays the month of manufacture, the circle on the right displays the year of manufacture.
The model numbers are located on the underside of the vehicles near the date code.
