We learned how to take positive steps to protect ourselves and our children from environmental contaminants.

Keynote speaker, Sandra Lane, explored the impact of community disparities in food availablity and housing quality on family health in urban areas.

Other Featured Speakers:

  • Janet Newton, President of the EMR (electromagnetic radiation) Policy Institute discussed why all individuals are at risk for negative health outcomes because of their daily exposure to EMR from cell phones and other sources.
  • Claire Barnett, Executive Director of the Healthy Schools Network, discussed how lowering children's exposure levels improves their academic performance, productivity, and school attendance .
  • Ogonnaya Dotson-Newman, from We Act for Environmental Justice in New York City, provided examples of how to  build community power to fight environmental racism and improve environmental health.

Listening to Mothers: The Aftermath of Cesareans

We examined cesarean section and its impact on babies delivered too soon, effects on initiating breastfeeding, bonding between mother and child, and chances of developing postpartum depression.   
This conference was intended to help those who work with pregnant women and new mothers understand the potential effects of having a cesarean section. 
Keynote speaker, Dr. Eugene Declercq, Assistant Dean and Doctoral Education Professor of Maternal and Child Health at Boston University, explored the risks and reasons for cesarean section.
Other Featured Speakers:

  • Patti Lane on the impact of cesareans on breastfeeding initiation and success
  • Christie Craigie-Carter on the emotional repercussions of cesareans
  • Melinda Kane on educating to reduce the cesarean rate, supporting women during cesarean recovery, and preparation for Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)
  • Panel discussion on facilitating a healthy birth.
