 Substance Abuse Manual

Substance use by women is a public health crisis:

Consumption of alcohol and other substances often reduces women’s inhibitions and clouds judgment such that women are less likely to use protection against pregnancy or infections during sexual encounters.  In fact, 25 percent of teens used drugs or alcohol before their last sexual intercourse (2003 CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey). Alcohol, tobacco, and other substance use during pregnancy can be devastating–even lethal–to the developing fetus and can have long-term disabling physical and cognitive effects. Children of substance abusers are at risk for neglect, abuse, and abandonment and take these issues with them throughout life as COSAs (children of substance abusers) and ACOAs (adult children of alcoholics).

Effective treatment and support services are essential. Women need to know about services available to them in the Capital Region, and health and human service providers are the critical links to help women access and coordinate these services.

In keeping with the Mission of Community Cradle, to achieve optimal health for mothers, babies and families in our communities, this directory serves as a valuable resource for consumers and health and human service providers. The directory lists most substance abuse and related services available in the capital region an organized, easy to locate fashion.
