Hazard: The opening between the grab bar and seat bottom of the stroller can allow an infant’s body to pass through and become entrapped at the neck by the grab bar, posing a strangulation hazard to young children when a child is not harnessed. Valco Baby Recalls Jogging Strollers Due to Strangulation Hazard

“Alexander Designs” Brand Drop-Side Cribs Sold Exclusively at JCPenney Recalled for Repair Due to Entrapment, Suffocation and Fall Hazards

Name of Product: Alexander Designs Ltd. brand drop-side cribs

Units: About 11,400

Manufacturer: Jardine Enterprises Ltd., of Taipei, Taiwan

Distributor: J.C. Penney, of Plano, Texas

Hazard: The drop-side rail hardware on the cribs can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side detaches, a hazardous gap is created between the drop-side rail and the crib mattress in which infants and toddlers can become wedged or entrapped, posing risks of suffocation and strangulation. In addition, children can fall out of the crib when the drop-side rail falls unexpectedly or detaches from the crib. Drop-side rail failures also can occur due to incorrect assembly or with age-related wear and tear. Other models of Jardine drop-side cribs were recalled for repair on June 24, 2010.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC has received two reports of incidents involving drop-side malfunctions on Alexander Designs drop-side cribs. In one incident, which involved a crib that had been misassembled, the plastic hardware broke and the drop-side rail fell unexpectedly. In a second incident, a hardware failure caused the drop-side rail to detach from the crib. No injuries were reported.

Description: This recall involves full-size cribs sold under the Alexander Designs brand name. “Alexander Designs Ltd.” and the JCPenney catalog/item number are printed on a label on the crib’s headboard. The following models are included:

Bravo Sports Recalls Trampolines Due to Fall Hazard

Units: About 160,000 units

Distributor: Bravo Sports, of Santa Fe Springs, Calif.

Hazard: Incorrectly assembled trampolines can allow the top rails and legs to bend or break during normal use, resulting in partial collapse of the trampoline. This poses a fall hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Bravo has received 247 reports of top rails bending or breaking during normal use. Four injuries have been reported due to the bending and breaking of trampolines.

Description: This recall involves AirZone and Variflex trampolines with model numbers 137083 (with wheels), 137536, 137683, 138088, 138467, 138472, 138489, 139275, 139283, 139284, 139300 and 139706. The model number is found on the safety label sewn to the pad cover. The units are 12’, 13’ and 14’ and come in blue, yellow and red.

Sold at: Sporting goods and mass market retail stores nationwide and on the Internet from January 2007 through September 2010 for between $200 and $400.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled trampolines. Additional Injuries Prompt JAKKS Pacific® to Reannounce Recall of Spa Factory™ Aromatherapy Kits Due to Explosion and Projectile Hazards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with JAKKS Pacific®, is reannouncing the recall of 516,000 Spa Factory™ Aromatherapy Fountain & Bath Benefits Kits. Consumers should immediately take the toy’s jars and caps away from children and dispose of any jar lids without vent holes. Only use jars that have lids with vent holes.

This children’s product was originally recalled in January 2009. Since that time, there have been additional injuries caused by the Spa Factory™ Spa Fantasy Aromatherapy Fountain & Bath Benefits Kits. Pressure from the buildup of carbon dioxide in the jars of Bath Bombs/Balls or Bath Fizzies that come with the kits can cause the unvented lids to blow off, posing explosion and projectile hazards. The flying pieces also can cause property damage.

Additionally, the mixture of water with the Bath Bombs/Balls or Bath Fizzies can create citric acid. This acid can get into consumers’ eyes when the jars explode, posing a risk of eye irritation.

As of January 2009, CPSC had received 88 reports of exploding jars, including 13 injuries to children. Since that time, CPSC has received 12 additional reports of exploding unvented jars of JAKKS’ Bath Bombs/Balls or Bath Fizzies, including 13 additional reported injuries. The new injuries include irritated eyes, irritated skin and one eye injury from projectile jar lids.

JAKKS Pacific® Spa Factory™ Spa Fantasy Aromatherapy Fountain & Bath Benefits Kits were sold at Sam’s Club, Walmart, Target and other stores nationwide from August 2008 through August 2010. They sold for between $13 and $50 and continue to be available in some stores.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC and the company are aware of 19 incidents of lacerations to boys' genital area. One of the incidents required medical attention.

Description: This recall involves battery-operated bathtub submarine toys. The toy is yellow, has a smiling face, turquoise windows, an orange propeller and an orange periscope that turns the toy on and off. The intake valve has a water pump that sucks in water to propel the submarine. The toy is intended for use by children during bath time.

Sold at: Mass merchandise retail stores nationwide and children's stores nationwide from November 2009 through September 2010 for about $7.

Dollar Tree Recalls Children's Projector Flashlights Due to Fire and Burn Hazards

Hazard: The flashlights can cause the batteries and/or bulb to overheat, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received three reports of incidents involving batteries overheating in the recalled flashlights. Reported incidents include a flashlight that melted and a flashlight battery that caught fire. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recalled projector flashlights are about 6 1/2 inches in length and have the Wolverine, Spider-Man and Iron Man characters and names printed on them. The flashlights come with five extra mini discs that attach to the flashlight to project various images. The back of the packaging contains the number 16879-20012-003-1003 and UPC 6 39277 16879 5.

The overalls were sold in brown or red in infant sizes 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months. The Carhartt logo is sewn on the front of the garment and the style numbers can be found on the sewn-in label hanging from the sleeve.

Graco Recalls Quattro™ and MetroLite™ Strollers Due to Risk of Entrapment and Strangulation
Four Infant Strangulation Deaths Reported

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Graco Children’s Products Inc., of Atlanta, Ga., is announcing the recall of about 2 million Graco strollers due to risk of entrapment and strangulation. CPSC and Graco have received four reports of infant strangulations that occurred in these strollers between 2003 and 2005. In addition, CPSC is aware of five reports of infants becoming entrapped, resulting in cuts and bruises, and one report of an infant having difficulty breathing.

Entrapment and strangulation can occur, especially to infants younger than 12 months of age, when a child is not harnessed. An infant can pass through the opening between the stroller tray and seat bottom, but his/her head and neck can become entrapped by the tray. Infants who become entrapped at the neck are at risk of strangulation.

The recall involves older versions of the Graco Quattro Tour™ and MetroLite™ strollers and travel systems manufactured prior to the existence of the January 2008 voluntary industry standard which addresses the height of the opening between the stroller’s tray and the seat bottom. This voluntary standard requires larger stroller openings that prevent infant entrapment and strangulation hazards.

This recall involves Graco Quattro Tour™ strollers and travel systems manufactured prior to November 2006 and MetroLite™ strollers and travel systems manufactured prior to July 2007.

The strollers and travel systems were distributed between November 2000 and December 2007. The model numbers are printed on a label at the lower portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels or underneath the stroller. The name “Graco” appears on a label on the stroller tray and the headrest. Models included in the recall are:

NOTE: Quattro and MetroLite strollers ending with the number 3 are NOT affected by this recall.

The strollers were sold at AAFES, Babies R Us, Burlington Coat Factory, Fred Meyer, Kmart, Meijers, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target, Walmart and other stores nationwide between November 2000 and December 2007 for between $90 and $190 for the strollers, and between $190 and $250 for travel systems.

The strollers were manufactured in China.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and contact Graco for a free repair kit. Ethan Allen Recalls to Repair Drop-Side Cribs Due to Entrapment, Suffocation and Fall Hazards

Name of Product: Drop-Side Cribs

Units: About 3,250

Manufacturer: Ethan Allen, of Danbury, Conn.

Hazard: The crib’s drop-side rail hardware can malfunction, detach or otherwise fail, causing part of the drop side rail to detach from the crib. When the drop-side rail partially detaches, it creates a space between the drop side and the crib mattress. An infant or toddler’s body can become entrapped in the space, which can lead to strangulation and/or suffocation. A child can also fall out of the crib. Drop-side incidents can also occur due to incorrect assembly and with age-related wear and tear.

Incidents/Injuries: Ethan Allen has received five reports of incidents involving the crib’s drop-side detaching, resulting in bumps and bruises to three children. One child became entrapped and two children fell out of the crib after the drop side detached, one child received a pinched hand and one child received an unspecified injury.

Description: This recall involves Ethan Allen brand cribs with item numbers 14-5650, 15-5650, 16-5650, 26-5650, 35-5622, 36-5620, 36-5622 and 38-5622. “Ethan Allen” and the item number are printed on a label on the crib’s headboard or footboard. The cribs were sold in a variety of colors.

Hazard: The crib’s drop-side rail hardware can malfunction, detach or otherwise fail, causing part of the drop-side rail to detach from the crib. When the drop-side rail partially detaches, it creates a space between the drop side and the crib mattress. An infant or toddler’s body can become entrapped in the space, which can lead to strangulation and/or suffocation. A child can also fall out of the crib. Drop-side incidents also can occur due to age-related wear and tear.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC is aware of one incident in which the crib’s drop side detached. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the following models of Longwood Forest drop-side cribs with plastic drop-side hardware: 6103S, 6105S, 6106S, 6108S, 6109S, 8025P, and 8029P. They were sold in white, brown, natural and oak colors. “Longwood Forest” or “Angel Line” and the model number are printed on a label on the crib’s headboard. The firm’s fixed-side cribs and drop-side cribs with metal rod-type hardware are not included in this recall.

Description: This recall involves Heritage Collection 3-in-1 drop-side cribs with Kmart model numbers 07-1248 and 07-1252. They were sold in natural and white colors. A label with Kmart and the model number can be found on the inner side of the crib’s headboard or footboard on the bottom rail. The 3-in-1 infant cribs can also be converted into a toddler bed and a double bed.

Sold at: Kmart stores nationwide from February 2007 through October 2008 for about $130.

A Safe Sleep For All Babies
CPSC and Child Safety Partners Launch National Education Campaign on Crib Safety For New and Expectant Parents

NEW YORK - Today, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) joined three child safety organizations at New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital to release "Safe Sleep for Babies," a new crib safety video aimed at helping all new parents avoid suffocation, strangulation and entrapment risks in the sleep environment. CPSC also is announcing three new recalls of dangerous drop-side cribs.

CPSC is collaborating with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Keeping Babies Safe (KBS), New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, and renowned journalist and mom Joan Lunden to educate new and expectant parents and caregivers on crib safety while they are at the hospital or visiting their pediatrician's office. The video (transcript) demonstrates how to keep babies safe and sound in cribs, bassinets and play yards.

"Nurses will not allow newborn babies to leave the hospital without parents having a safe car seat. I also believe that we need to make sure that new parents provide a safe crib, bassinet or play yard for their babies to sleep in," said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. "By reaching new parents before they leave the hospital and again when they visit their pediatrician or health clinic, we hope to prevent deaths and ensure that all babies have a safe sleep."

This education effort is part of CPSC's Safe Sleep Initiative, a multi-pronged effort aimed at reducing deaths and injuries associated with unsafe sleep environments. In addition to this education effort, CPSC's Safe Sleep Initiative includes the development of new crib standards, warnings about drop-side cribs, sleep positioners, and infant slings, and the recall of millions of cribs in the past five years.

CPSC is aware of about 30 crib deaths and hundreds of injuries. Cribs are a leading cause of nursery product-related deaths. About one-third of the deaths result from structural failures of the crib from loose, missing, or detached hardware. The majority of deaths in cribs are attributed to the presence of extra bedding in the crib, such as pillows and comforters.

Moderated by Joan Lunden, CPSC will distribute this "Safe Sleep" video online and through its network of about 100 hospitals nationwide.

"By spearheading a comprehensive training program for health professionals on safe sleep practices and distributing the video to hospitals nationwide we will help educate new parents before they leave the hospital," said Joyce Davis, President of Keeping Babies Safe. • Use a firm, tight-fitting mattress
• Never use extra padding, blankets or pillows under baby
• Remove pillows or thick comforters
• Do not use positioning devices – they are not necessary and can be deadly
• Regularly check cribs for loose, missing or broken parts or slats
• Do not try to fix a broken crib
• Place cribs or playpens away from windows and window covering cords to avoid fall and strangulation hazards
• Place baby monitor cords away from cribs or playpens to avoid strangulation
