Pregnancy & Childbirth | Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics Recalls Chemical Used in Pregnancy Tests [Apr 04, 2006]
The Johnson & Johnson company Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics on Friday announced that it is voluntarily recalling a chemical that might produce false-negative results when used in diagnostic tests for pregnancy and other conditions, the AP/Houston Chronicle reports. The chemical is used in the company's Vitros Immunodiagnostic ECi/ECiQ laboratory test system, according to Ortho-Clinical spokesperson Stephen Dnistrian. The ECi/ECiQ system is used to screen for more than 40 diseases and conditions, including HIV, hepatitis, pregnancy, heart attack and thyroid disorders. According to Dnistrian, the company has verified that three U.S. labs and five labs based overseas received chemicals that did not function properly. Ortho-Clinical has not received reports of injuries associated with the chemical, Dnistrian said. He added that the recall concerns two of 50 lots of the chemical in distribution. Othro-Clinical recommends that patients concerned about test results who received diagnostic tests in the last 60 days speak with their physicians or call the company (AP/Houston Chronicle, 3/31).

CPSC Warns of Banned "Kinder Chocolate Eggs" Containing Toys Which Can Pose Choking, Aspiration Hazards to Young Children
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is aware of reports that some retailers in the U.S. have been selling Kinder-brand chocolate eggs in advance of the Easter holiday. CPSC staff is alerting retailers that the product as sold is banned in the U.S. and they should be removed from store shelves. In August 1997, CPSC conducted a recall of these eggs.
This product is banned for sale in the United States because the toy surprise hidden inside can pose choking and aspiration hazards to children younger than 3 years of age.
The Kinder eggs are hollow milk chocolate eggs about the size of a large hen's egg in an orange, white and blue foil wrapper. The toy within the egg is contained in an oval-shaped plastic capsule. The toy requires assembly and each egg contains a different toy. The labeling is in various languages.
Consumers who have purchased this product should immediately take them away from young children.
